Jean Jackets

I don’t know why, but I don’t like jean jackets, in the traditional sense. I think they look cute on everyone else, but very Farmer in the Dell on me. Which is why I love pairing this jean blazer with anything I can. It’s actually 10+ years old. And an extra small. Since it still fits that means I haven’t gained a pound since my early 20’s, right?

Spring Cleaning

You know how I’ve mentioned in my last few blogs about how busy I’ve been? Well, I’ve been really busy. So, one would think I’d spend this week chillaxing and catching up on TV or my blog or maybe do some wedding planning. Nope. Since I rented the rental car for a week I decided it was necessary we take advantage of that and the remaining few days of spring and take a bunch of stuff to Goodwill. In order to take a bunch of stuff to Goodwill, that would require me to clean out my closets. And, that’s what I did. First, on Tuesday, I decided it was necessary to stop at Home Depot to buy an outdoor storage unit for our patio so that we could take a bunch of stuff out of our spare bedroom closet. Then I removed everything from my closet and proceeded to color coordinate it all.

Now, I’m going to go off on a little side tangent for a minute, so bear with me. I have a lot of clothes, yes. But, there’s still a ton I don’t wear. Well, I read this really interesting blog article that was talking about how you should have only 40 articles of clothing in your closet. As if. Ok, that’s not the part I wanted to point out to you. In this related article, she talked about how it makes so much more sense to organize your closet by color, not by season. For example, my closet had been organized by tanks (by color, lightest to darkest), then short sleeved tees, long sleeved tees, cardigans, blazers, dresses. It made sense and I never thought to question it. Until I read this astonishing article. Why hadn’t I thought of that?photo (5)

As I cleaned out my closet I also put all my clothes on the bed in piles my color. And, I have to say, since I’m on a quest to wear more color on color instead of neutral on neutral, it’s so simple now! I love it!! I love it so much I also took a picture to share with you.

I ended up dropping off three totes of stuff to Goodwill as well as two of my KISA’s computers (we each still have one, so it’s not like we’ll be missing them). The only downfall to pulling everything out is putting it all back away. I’m sure I’ll get to it…in the coming weeks.

Big Sur

Just when we didn’t think we could top that weekend, we did.

These last couple of months I’ve been engineering a plan with a couple of our friends, J-Lu, from Chicago. Last year was my KISA’s 30th birthday, and naturally I wanted to make it a huge celebration. Which I did. I surprised him with a trip to Cape Cod and had a bunch of his high school friends rent a house with us to give him another surprise. Since he lived in Colorado for 10 years after college I then gave him a second surprise – a trip to Colorado to go camping. I told him a couple weeks prior for that trip since I’m not the best person when it comes to knowing about camping gear. Well, we had a second surprise for him during this trip as well and had our friends J-Lu fly out to Colorado to go camping with us. We did some back-country camping, hiked a 14’er, hiked out to some hot springs to camp, went white water rafting, basically did it all. It was a pretty epic 30th birthday and it wasn’t even mine (oh, and that’s in addition to his birthday weekend in Chicago with his brother at a Red Sox game and also a fishing trip).

Well, J-Lu have been wanting to come out to SF since we moved out and we decided to make it happen. Coincidentally, one of the dates they were looking at was my KISA’s 31st birthday, so we had to make it happen. We again planned an epic camping trip for him down in Big Sur. They also spent time in SF and Napa, taking in all the sites and drinking up all the wine. We got home from DC early Monday morning, and J-Lu was on our doorstep Monday night (we didn’t want the fun to stop). My KISA didn’t know about their visit, so when I went downstairs to let them up, he was closing the window upstairs and saw them. The look on his face was hysterical. He had been duped.

On Thursday we left on our trek to Big Sur and had some welcome companions meeting up with us on Friday – Dubs and B. Wils. We spent Friday doing a “leisurely” 11 mile hike that included climbing around some rocks on a secluded beach.

On Saturday we went to a jade beach in a quest to find some jade. I’m not really sure if we found any as none of us had done any research on what we were looking for. At the very least we found some pretty awesome green rocks. After that we went to see a pretty amazing waterfall that flows into the ocean. I mean, it’s pretty amazing if you’re into that kind of beautiful scenery. We then went to another cove. I proceeded to climb the rocks and go away from the group. It seemed like a great idea until I was climbing onto the front of the rock, surrounded by the ocean, and slipped on the wet rock. All my pores opened up and I proceeded to sweat and shake profusely. Thankfully I’d caught myself and ended up with just a scrape on my leg, but I decided my adventures out there were over.

We then had to bid adieu to J-Lu so that they could head back to Chicago. I was pretty bummed and was doing everything in my power to prolong their leaving. Dubs and I then went on a hike to distract ourselves from our loss by looking at more waterfalls. That night we cooked brats, burgers, and smores on the grill and I forgot J-Lu’s existence temporarily while I devoured more meat than a starving tiger.

Sunday morning we woke up and immediately packed up our tents to head back for the city. On the way back we stopped for breakfast in Carmel at one of the best breakfast joints I’d ever eaten at, called Katie’s Place. I convinced the table to order a second entrée for us all to share because they had pancakes with real maple syrup like my grandpa used to me. It was so good everyone hoisted me up on their shoulders as we left the restaurant. Or at least they should have. It was damn good.

On the way home my KISA made the fatal mistake of falling asleep on the drive home. Don’t worry, though, I was driving. I decided we really needed a bathroom break. In Gilroy. At the outlet malls. He thankfully didn’t wake up until we were off the exit and pulling into the outlet malls. I calmed him a little by pulling up to the Levi’s store first. He muttered under his breath while he grabbed a half a dozen pairs of jeans to try on. After he settled satisfactorily on a gray pair he conceded and wanted to know what stores I was looking to go into. This is when karma kicked me in the ass. I walked into J. Crew and noticed some signs on the table. Then the evil sales lady confirmed what the signs said and told me everything in the store was half off. Judging by all the stuff I’d bought you would have thought she’d told me it was free. Judging by my bank statement it wasn’t.

As I left, my KISA, who I should mention is the most incredibly great, thoughtful, considerate man I’ve ever met, told me he was in the sunglasses store. I walked in and saw some polarized Ray-Bans on the counter that he was looking at. Since I was still on my J. Crew high, it didn’t even faze me that he was buying himself a second pair of sunglasses, while his wonderful fiancé lost hers on the train when someone snatched them out of my…lap. Then, he told me he’d picked them out for me. I guess he had a discount coupon for there and knew how devastated I’d been that I’d lost mine. Did I mention how incredibly great, thoughtful, and considerate he is? Well, he is. I put on my new sunglasses as I skipped out of the store.

15 Groomsmen

On Sunday, since we hadn’t had enough of the social aspect, we went back into DC and met up with a couple of my KISA’s friends that live in Maryland and were married last summer (which he was a groomsman for). I was reminded of why my KISA wants 15ish groomsmen in our wedding. I don’t know the actual number, but I don’t really think that’s an exaggeration. See, his parents moved out to the Boston suburbs when he was 6 and he didn’t have any other family out there. He quickly made friends with a group of guys that have been the best of friends ever since. And, there are a lot of them. It’s not like normal high school friends where you see each other once in a while – they go on mancations together, have iPhone group chats all the time, and my KISA even told them all he was going to propose to me the morning before. And, they’ve all been in each other’s weddings.

There is something about hanging out with these guys that makes my KISA’s eyes light up like I’ve never seen before. Granted, he has a ton of friends, but not like these guys. It’s almost like he’s whole again. And, that’s precisely how our Sunday went. We had a ton of fun laughing and telling stories. That evening my cousin and her husband flew back into DC (where they live) right before we flew out, so they came to meet us all and have some drinks and appetizers. It was a pretty awesome ending to a pretty great weekend.

DC Wedding Attire

This was my attire for George and Kristen’s wedding. I thought the dress was really cute…until I saw pictures of myself in it from the side at the wedding. I’m not pregnant, although the dress made it appear that way.

Georgie Porgie Puddin’ and Pie

Last, last Saturday (two ago) my KISA and I took the red eye out to DC for my friend George’s wedding. He married this pretty awesome woman named Kristen. Interestingly enough, I was there when they met, gave Kristen some advice on George, heard stories from George about how amazing she was in the days following, and lived next door to George in Vienna during the first few months of their relationship. They’re a pretty great couple, so I wasn’t going to miss that wedding for the world.

We had a friend that was flying on a red eye out of LA and getting in at the same time as us and another friend that had gotten in the night before from Mexico. The four of us rode down to VA together, sharing stories of the foreign lives we used to live. I crashed hard once we got to the hotel, but I don’t think the boys minded as they all went to a vineyard to have some drinks (yes, interestingly enough there are vineyards right outside DC, in VA….who knew, right?).

So, it’s funny how once you have to start planning a wedding how much you start paying attention to other weddings. And, their wedding was pretty near perfect. Just to give you an idea, it was at a vineyard. Their ceremony was on an island, with a pond surrounding it (as if the vineyard wasn’t beautiful enough), that had a bridge going out to it. And, there were old farm buildings in the background. Our first glimpse of Kristen was as she was walking through one of the rows of the vineyards off in the distance, walking across the bridge, and then coming down the aisle. On a frickin’ island. It was quite probably the most gorgeous wedding venue I’d ever seen. After the ceremony we walked back across the bridge to a patio area that had a fireplace and had chairs and tables set up, as well as cocktail tables with some pretty delicious cheese. And, an open bar…that had Mike’s Hard Lemonade. I’m pretty sure they didn’t forget any detail.

We proceeded to drink our way into the evening. At one point in time a couple of my friends decided it would be a good idea to jump in the pond. They were pretty discreet about it…until they walked back in with their hair and clothes soaking wet (they didn’t jump in with their clothes on, but obviously had to put them back on after being done swimming. It’s making me reconsider my desire to get married on a lake as I have too many friends that might consider that a good idea.

Back to Life, Back to Reality

I need routine. I didn’t realize this until spending almost 3.5 years traveling for my last job. I realized how stressed and frazzled I become if I don’t have some kind of consistency. We have been on the go for the last three weeks straight. Granted, I’m not complaining because I got to see some pretty amazing sites and hang out with some even more amazing people that I don’t get to see all the time. It’s been fun, but I need to slowwwww down now. Oh, and catch up on this blog thing I created.

No Tattoo Club

Great news you all: I’m joining the No Tattoo Club! My KISA is the chairman, so naturally I wanted to join.

I decided I was a rebel at the ripe old age of 18 and decided to get a tattoo for my birthday present to myself. Contrary to what my KISA thinks, butterfly tramp stamps were cool in the Midwest when I was 18 (he claims they never were). Since my passion then was to join the Cool Club, that was the membership card. I wanted to make sure people knew how really cool I was and that I could tolerate pain pretty well, so I also got my tongue pierced that night.

Fast forward 12 years later, and I’ve decided that I’m really not cool. Or a tramp. They had a Groupon for $200 that was for 6 treatments to have a tattoo removed. It was time. I told my KISA I was going to join my club and he was LIVID. Oh, not because he doesn’t think my tattoo is the most idiotic thing I’ve ever done. No. It’s because he claims I can’t join the No Tattoo Club. I explained to him that I would no longer have a tattoo and that would therefore qualify me. He says I’d have to start my own club: Former Tattoo Club. I’m going to start a petition. Let me know if you want to sign it.

So, I just had my third treatment on Thursday. They remove the tattoo with a laser. A laser is essentially light of some kind. They make you wear these sunglasses so that the light doesn’t bother your eyes (or theirs as well). You know how when someone welds something they wear a mask so that the sparks don’t bother their eyes? This is no different. And, the pulses of light look like sparks. And, you know they’re strong if this tattoo is on my lower back and I’m facing away from it and can still see it. That might be why it blistered. And then the blister expanded and made a really big blister over all of my tattoo. That proceed to pop right as we got off the BART at the airport on Friday. It literally was like my water broke. The back of my dress was soaked. My KISA had no sympathy for me. It made me want to join the No Tattoo Club even more.
